OpenAI Builds an App-Discovery Layer Inside ChatGPT

OpenAI’s September 29 announcements amount to more than a collection of new assistant features. In TechCrunch’s account, they point toward ChatGPT becoming a place where people find, open, and use third-party software without first navigating a conventional app store. The company has unveiled pieces of discovery, interface, identity, and an enterprise marketplace. It has not yet announced a comparable billing or revenue-sharing system, leaving an important part of the app-store analogy unresolved.

Discovery moves into the conversation

The proposed entry point is a ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI says the assistant will recommend an app when it recognizes that the app could help with a user’s task. A person can then connect that service and work with it inside ChatGPT rather than moving to a separate website or installed program. The company says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, a figure that explains why app makers might view placement there as a distribution opportunity. That audience number is OpenAI’s claim, not an independent measure in the TechCrunch report.

The technical layer is an expanded plugin system that supports interactive extensions. Instead of returning only a tool result, an app can present a panel in which the person continues working while the conversation remains in view. TechCrunch describes demos involving meeting information and design work: a meeting app could show calendar events and notes, while design services could let people revise a project in context. These examples illustrate the intended workflow; they do not establish how broadly third-party applications have adopted it.

OpenAI also described changes to plugin review. Developers would be able to track submissions, see required fixes, request human review, and update tools without restarting the whole process. Those details matter because an app-discovery surface depends not just on user demand but on whether developers can reliably get software approved and maintained.

Identity, agents, and a partner marketplace

A separate “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature is meant to let people carry their ChatGPT identity and existing AI allowance into third-party applications. OpenAI named 16 launch partners for that effort, TechCrunch reports, and says it expects more. The benefit to users and developers will depend on how the allowance works in practice, which services support it, and whether the handoff feels simpler than existing accounts.

The company has also introduced an enterprise app marketplace. TechCrunch reports more than 30 partners at launch, spanning design, customer service, sales, legal, security, and infrastructure services. Eligible customers can apply part of their OpenAI commitment toward approved partner software, according to the company. That is a business channel distinct from the consumer-facing suggestion inside a chat, even if both encourage applications to live closer to OpenAI’s platform.

OpenAI’s Dots agents add another route to software. The company says each agent has a cloud computer and browser and can use connected apps to complete assigned work. OpenAI says the agents can access an ecosystem of more than 4,000 apps and do background “proactive research” in connected services in read-only mode, with user approval for actions. Those are stated design boundaries, not evidence in this article that every real-world agent workflow will stay within them.

The missing economic layer

TechCrunch’s central observation is that discovery may shift from a person browsing a store to an assistant proposing a service at the moment it is useful. That would change who controls the initial recommendation, the user interface, and the connection between customer and developer. OpenAI also says applications can be shared through lightweight ChatGPT-produced websites, where colleagues sign in with their own permissions. The vision is wider than a single chatbot plugin menu.

Yet OpenAI did not announce a general billing or revenue-sharing mechanism comparable to the economic machinery of established app stores. Nor did it say that connecting a service through ChatGPT removes a separate subscription or other charge. Those omissions limit any claim that it has already replaced an app store. The reported launch builds distribution and access points; it leaves the commercial settlement between users, developers, and the platform only partly described.

The immediate development, then, is a stronger attempt to make ChatGPT the starting point for software use. Whether developers gain meaningful reach, users trust assistant-led recommendations, and the marketplace becomes a substantial business channel remain questions for adoption rather than conclusions of the announcement.
