MG Ship Adds AI Routing and Carrier Scoring to Global Freight

MG Ship has introduced an AI module that recommends international freight routes and carriers for retailers and commercial shippers. The system is built into the company’s existing supply-chain intelligence platform and is intended to turn operational data into choices about how cargo should move, rather than simply displaying where it is.

The launch comes with ambitious return figures. MG Ship points to industry operational data showing lower fuel use, faster transit and reduced transport costs from dynamic route planning, while chief executive Suki Cheung says deployments can pay back within months. Those figures are presented as company and industry claims; the source does not provide the samples, methodology or independent verification needed to treat them as universal outcomes.

Routing moves from visibility to recommendations

MG Ship says its platform already combines live cargo telemetry, trade intelligence, risk monitoring and predictive analytics. The new optimisation engine applies those inputs to route selection across international trade corridors. It considers both live and historical lane transit records alongside weather, congestion at air and ocean ports, customs risk alerts and the reliability of previous journeys.

That mix is designed to produce a low-cost, low-risk recommendation for each shipment. The distinction matters within MG Ship’s description of the product: operators are not only shown a cargo position or a developing disruption, but are given a proposed route based on current conditions. The recommendation remains an operational input rather than a guaranteed result, because the source does not describe how the engine responds when its signals conflict or conditions change after a route has been selected.

The company says early implementations have reduced variation in lead times and spending on expedited freight while improving on-time, in-full delivery. These are reported outcomes rather than independently audited benchmarks. Even so, they indicate what MG Ship wants customers to measure: predictability and service performance as well as the headline price of transport.

Carrier scoring looks beyond the spot rate

The module also evaluates carriers by lane and service tier. According to MG Ship, its ranking considers historical on-time performance, transit consistency, exceptions, claims, available volume and total cost to serve. That creates a broader comparison than choosing the lowest spot rate, particularly when a cheaper booking carries a higher chance of delay or exception handling.

Before peak quarters, customers can run scenario simulations with alternative carrier allocation rules. The platform models how those choices could affect lead times, service levels, freight spending and risk. This lets an operator compare prospective allocations before committing capacity, although the source does not disclose the accuracy of the simulations or specify how much historical data is required for a dependable recommendation.

The combination of route and carrier analysis is central to the product’s pitch. A route may look efficient while the available carrier performs inconsistently on that lane; conversely, a reliable carrier may be assigned through a corridor facing congestion or customs risk. MG Ship is positioning the module as one decision layer that weighs both sets of conditions together.

Return figures set a demanding test for deployment

MG Ship cites industry operational data in which dynamic route planning cut fuel use by 15% to 20%, accelerated transit by 15% to 25% and lowered transportation costs by 12% to 22%. It associates those projects with payback periods of three to six months. Predictive forecasting is credited with reducing projection errors by 20% to 40%, improving planning accuracy by as much as 35% and cutting excess inventory by 20% to 30%, with returns in six to 12 months.

The company also says automated freight documentation can reduce the duration of manual tasks by up to 85% and recover its cost within three to six months. Over five years, the cited data associates AI use with operational expense reductions of 10% to 25% and warehouse productivity gains of 25% to 35%.

Those percentages cover different activities, time horizons and types of return, so they should not be read as a single forecast for every customer. No baseline, deployment count or calculation method is included in the source. Cheung is due to discuss the metrics at an upcoming WMX Asia panel alongside executives from Pos Malaysia, Omniva and OnyX Space, and argues that measurable results are moving logistics investment from trials into production.

For MG Ship’s new module, that shift creates a clear burden of proof. Customers can compare its recommendations against actual lane performance, freight expense and service outcomes. The product’s value will therefore depend not only on producing an appealing route, but on whether its carrier rankings and simulations consistently improve the measures the company has chosen to emphasize.
