Four-legged inspection robot detecting a machinery fault in a heavy industrial plant

SAP and ANYbotics Connect Robot Inspections Directly to Maintenance

ANYbotics and SAP are connecting autonomous inspection robots directly to enterprise resource planning, turning a four-legged machine into a mobile source of maintenance data.

In heavy industry, people still inspect hazardous plants, offshore assets and high-voltage areas. Robots carrying thermal, acoustic and visual sensors can patrol repeatedly, while SAP converts a detected fault into parts, cost and work-order decisions.

The value lies in eliminating the delay between seeing a problem and creating an operational response.

A hot pump can become a work order

A human inspector may notice an unusual sound, write it down and enter it later. By then, the condition may have worsened.

An ANYbotics robot processes sensor data onboard. When it identifies an abnormal motor frequency or overheating, APIs can send the finding to SAP Asset Management. The system checks parts, estimates downtime and schedules an engineer.

This creates consistent measurements and a traceable flow from physical observation to business process. The robot does not repair the machine; it gathers evidence and accelerates the response.

Thresholds matter. An overly sensitive system can produce hundreds of weak alerts and cause maintenance teams to ignore the dashboard. Middleware must filter telemetry and translate only meaningful faults into the structured format SAP expects.

Edge computing solves the factory reality

Industrial sites contain concrete, metal and electromagnetic interference that weaken ordinary connectivity. Streaming thermal video and lidar continuously would also consume excessive bandwidth.

The robot therefore analyses most data locally and sends the specific fault and location rather than the entire raw feed. Private 5G can provide coverage across large facilities where Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Security must treat the robot as a roaming network endpoint. Zero-trust controls verify identity, restrict accessible SAP modules and cut the connection quickly if compromise is suspected.

Stored telemetry can support future predictive maintenance, but only if the data lake preserves quality and context. The immediate repair provides value now; years of consistent observations may reveal failure patterns later.

Deployment succeeds through people and small pilots

Workers may interpret robots as a threat to jobs. Management needs to explain that the initial purpose is removing people from toxic, high-voltage or otherwise dangerous inspection zones.

Roles still change. Inspectors may shift toward interpreting SAP tickets, managing robots and performing repairs. Training and the ability to take manual control help build trust in the system.

Rollout should begin in one bounded area with known hazards and reliable connectivity. Teams can compare what the robot observes with what SAP records and correct the pipeline daily.

Only after the data matches reality should companies add robots or automate downstream steps such as parts ordering. Network capacity and security need reassessment at each expansion.

Physical AI becomes enterprise infrastructure when it joins the same systems that manage assets, inventory and labour. Treating the robot as a standalone demonstration leaves the operational value trapped in another dashboard.

The SAP and ANYbotics approach closes the loop from sensor to action. Its success depends less on the novelty of a walking machine than on precise thresholds, secure connectivity, clean translation and employees who know how to turn robotic observation into safer maintenance.

Economic evaluation should include avoided downtime, reduced hazardous exposure and the maintenance required by the robots themselves. A patrol that creates more false alarms than useful interventions can consume engineering time even if its sensors perform accurately. Plants should compare automated findings with human inspections during the pilot and refine thresholds before removing established checks. Over time, confidence can grow task by task. The strongest deployment will show not only that the robot can traverse the facility, but that its observations consistently improve the decisions recorded in SAP.
