Rowspace Raises $50M to Make Private Equity’s Memory Searchable

Private equity firms accumulate years of deal memos, underwriting models, partner notes and portfolio data. Yet when a fresh opportunity arrives, analysts often begin again because those records sit in disconnected systems and formats.

Rowspace is betting that this institutional memory can become usable intelligence. The San Francisco startup has emerged from stealth with $50 million across a seed round led by Sequoia and a Series A co-led by Sequoia and Emergence Capital. Its proposition is more ambitious than adding a chatbot to the back office: build AI that learns how a particular investment firm gathers evidence, resolves discrepancies and reaches decisions.

Turning scattered history into usable judgment

Rowspace connects structured and unstructured information across document repositories, accounting systems, presentations and investment platforms. It then applies what the company describes as a finance-native lens, reflecting the way a client interprets its own information rather than treating every document as generic text.

The practical promise is straightforward. A junior analyst reviewing a new deal could retrieve comparable transactions, earlier decisions and internal underwriting patterns without searching shared drives or relying on colleagues to remember where the relevant file lives. The platform can be accessed through Rowspace’s interface, Excel, Microsoft Teams or a firm’s existing data infrastructure.

Privacy is fundamental to that design. Processing takes place inside the client’s own cloud environment, so proprietary information remains under the firm’s control. In a sector where an investment edge is both confidential and institution-specific, data location is not a secondary technical detail. It is part of the product’s value.

Why private equity needs specialised AI

Rowspace was founded by MIT graduates Michael Manapat and Yibo Ling, whose careers approached the problem from opposite directions. Manapat built machine-learning systems at Stripe and later helped lead Notion’s AI expansion. Ling served as a finance executive and investor, repeatedly confronting the manual work required to synthesise fragmented information.

Their thesis took shape when general-purpose generative AI showed promise in due diligence but lacked the context needed for dependable financial work. The limitation was not simply model intelligence. It was the absence of reconciled, proprietary data and a system that understood how finance teams actually operate.

That helps explain the scale of early adoption claimed by the company. Rowspace says roughly ten major private equity and credit firms are already using the platform on seven-figure annual contracts, with customers managing hundreds of billions to nearly a trillion dollars in assets. Although those customers were not named, the reported contract values suggest the product is being positioned as core infrastructure rather than a lightweight productivity tool.

Vertical AI makes data the advantage

The investor case also addresses a broader question hanging over enterprise software: what remains defensible as foundation models improve? Sequoia’s Alfred Lin and Emergence Capital’s Jake Saper point to specialised workflows and deeply connected proprietary data as the answer.

That argument is especially strong in private equity. A general model can summarise a document, but it does not automatically know which historical comparison a firm trusts, how partners weigh conflicting signals or where past judgment proved right. Those patterns live inside the organisation.

Rowspace’s ambition is a firm that never forgets—one where experienced investors’ methods can be captured and made available throughout the team. That does not mean judgment becomes automatic. It means professionals can begin with more of the institution’s accumulated context.

The $50 million raise is therefore more than a bet on faster document search. It is a bet that the most valuable enterprise AI will be shaped by the knowledge an organisation already owns, provided that knowledge can finally be connected, governed and brought into the moment a decision is made.
