Enterprise AI often becomes complicated before the model answers its first useful question. Data is exported from an operational database into a vector store, transformed through an ETL pipeline, connected to a model, secured again, and refreshed whenever the original record changes.
RavenDB is trying to collapse those layers with what it calls the first fully integrated, database-native AI Agent Creator. Built into its open-source document database, the tool exposes relevant information to an agent where the data already lives.
RavenDB chief executive and founder Oren Eini says organisations can move from an idea to a deployed agent in one or two days. The speed comes from eliminating separate infrastructure while the database manages vector indexing, semantic search, model memory, summarisation, and access. Developers can focus on the desired result instead of assembling the retrieval plumbing first.
Live Data Removes the Refresh Gap
Traditional retrieval systems often copy information into a vector database before a model can search it. That introduces delay and another place where security, cost, and operations must be managed. If a customer order changes after the last refresh, an assistant may confidently report yesterday’s status.
RavenDB uses built-in vector indexing and semantic search against operational information, allowing an agent to see updates immediately. A shipment query can therefore reflect the latest database record without waiting for a separate synchronisation job.
The design also improves semantic retrieval rather than relying only on the mathematically nearest vector. RavenDB says customers use an agent to re-rank search results for practical relevance, applying model judgement after the initial similarity search. That extra stage can distinguish information that is linguistically similar from information that actually answers the operational question.
Existing Permissions Contain the Agent
An agent does not execute as a privileged part of the database. It operates like an external entity with the same rights as the person using it. That prevents the AI from automatically gaining broader access merely because it is integrated into the platform.
The boundary is valuable only when user permissions are correct. An overprivileged employee account will still give the agent excessive reach, and conversational access can make sensitive information easier to discover. Database-native security reduces layers but does not remove the need for access review, audit logs, and careful agent instructions.
Keeping the workflow close to the source may nevertheless simplify threat analysis. Fewer exports, connectors, and copied stores mean fewer locations to protect and fewer synchronisation paths whose behaviour must be understood. It can also reduce the operational burden of monitoring duplicated information across several services.
Embedded Agents Target Narrow Operational Value
RavenDB has used the creator in recruitment, where an agent reads uploaded résumés and compares them with job requirements to rank candidates. Such a system can reduce screening work, although hiring use requires close attention to relevance, bias, explanation, and human review.
The company has added vector search, embedding generation, and generative functions to its database during the past year. The Agent Creator brings those pieces together, turning the database from passive storage into an active participant in an AI workflow.
Forrester analyst Stephanie Liu has warned that poor documentation limits agent autonomy. Direct access to live data cannot repair unclear policies or missing context, but it can support useful, bounded tasks before an organisation is ready for broad autonomous operation.
RavenDB’s proposition is that enterprise agents become practical when integration complexity is hidden inside a trusted data platform. The real test will be whether that convenience preserves portability, observability, and responsible decisions. If it does, the database may become not just the agent’s memory, but the boundary that makes its work manageable.
