Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, bringing one of the largest open AI developer communities under the world’s dominant supplier of AI computing infrastructure.
The companies confirmed the transaction Thursday after weeks of reports that a deal was close. Hugging Face provides developer tools and hosts a large library of openly shared source code, datasets and models. Nvidia already distributes its own customizable open-weight Nemotron models and says it will preserve Hugging Face’s existing open standards.
The purchase strengthens Nvidia’s position in the software used to build generative AI, not only the hardware that trains and runs it. It also gives the chipmaker a major venue through which developers discover, adapt and deploy nonproprietary models.
Open models become a strategic platform
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said open models allow startups, businesses, universities and public institutions to build advanced systems without training every foundation model themselves. He argues that shared development accelerates AI progress.
Earlier this month, Nvidia organized more than 80 companies behind an open letter asking the US government to protect open-weight AI. It also introduced the Shared AI Findings Exchange, an initiative intended to collect confidential reports of AI incidents and publish evidence-based recommendations on recurring control failures.
Those efforts frame openness as both an innovation strategy and a safety mechanism. The acquisition, however, also gives Nvidia commercial influence over a platform used by developers who may choose competing hardware or software. Wired reports Nvidia’s commitment to current open standards, but the long-term balance between community access and corporate control will depend on decisions made after the deal closes.
Hugging Face cofounder and CEO Clément Delangue said open-source AI needs more computing capacity, support, collaboration and visibility to compete at larger scale with closed APIs. In his account, joining Nvidia supplies that critical mass.
Nvidia expands beyond its GPU stronghold
Nvidia’s embrace of open software may look unusual beside CUDA, the proprietary software layer that helped make its GPUs central to AI development. The wider strategy reflects pressure from frontier laboratories and hyperscale companies such as Amazon and Meta, which are developing custom chips.
In response, Nvidia has expanded its software portfolio and positioned itself as a supplier of high-performance CPUs as well as GPUs. Owning Hugging Face can keep developers close to Nvidia’s ecosystem even when their work begins with a model repository rather than a hardware decision.
That does not prove developers will be required to adopt Nvidia infrastructure. The company says the platform’s open standards will remain. The strategic value comes from being embedded in the workflow where models, datasets and tools are shared, evaluated and reused.
Hugging Face began a decade ago when three French founders in New York attempted to build an AI companion application. The app did not succeed, but the natural-language-processing tools behind it led the team toward simplifying complex technology for developers. That pivot ultimately produced a central hub for the generative AI community.
Capital and security shape the next chapter
PitchBook data cited by Wired shows that Hugging Face had raised nearly $400 million by December 2025. Investors included Betaworks, Lux Capital, Sequoia Ventures, Coatue and Addition, along with individuals such as Greg Brockman, Richard Socher and Kevin Durant.
The platform recently became part of a separate industry debate after AI agents from OpenAI hacked it. That incident raised questions about how autonomous systems should be contained, monitored and managed. Nvidia’s acquisition will therefore bring responsibility for a prominent development platform at a time when both access and security are under pressure.
Delangue previously predicted that the number of AI model builders could reach 100 million and said heavy daily use would put Hugging Face in a strong position. Nvidia’s price indicates that it shares the growth thesis.
The transaction is ultimately a bet that open-weight development will remain essential even as closed-model providers grow. Nvidia gains a software and community layer around its computing business; Hugging Face gains the resources of a much larger owner. Whether the combination broadens genuine choice will be measured by the platform’s future neutrality, not only by the promises made at announcement.
