Modal Labs Is Reportedly Near a $750 Million Round, but the Deal Is Not Closed

AI infrastructure provider Modal Labs is approaching a $750 million financing led by Accel at a $15.75 billion valuation that includes the new investment, according to a person familiar with the talks cited by TechCrunch. Modal declined to comment. The reported terms would more than triple the valuation attached to its $355 million round four months ago, but a deal under discussion is not completed financing. Neither the amount nor the valuation should be presented as money already raised or a final agreed price.

The proposed round reflects investor interest in inference: running trained AI models to deliver outputs for users and applications. TechCrunch says demand is rising particularly among customers using open-source models. Modal also supports training and other compute-intensive work without requiring developers to operate their own servers. The article does not provide current customer revenue or profit figures tied to the proposed transaction.

A larger valuation in a competitive market

Modal’s previous financing gave it a $4.65 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch. The newly reported $15.75 billion figure is a post-investment valuation. Comparing those two figures shows the scale of the contemplated increase, but not the dilution, terms, or final ownership that any new investors would receive. A funding conversation can change before signature.

Other inference specialists are also seeking capital at much higher prices, the article reports. Baseten is said to be approaching a round at a $26 billion valuation, while Fireworks and Fal have discussed fresh financing. Those are accounts of market activity, not confirmed results for Modal. TechCrunch also notes that even fast-growing providers may have thin margins because acquiring or leasing computing capacity is expensive. Investor appetite should therefore not be read as evidence that the sector has solved its cost problem.

The company told Reuters in May that it had passed $300 million in annualized revenue, according to TechCrunch. Annualizing a rate is not the same as reporting a full year of recognized revenue, and the source does not publish Modal’s margin. The earlier revenue figure helps explain investor interest, but it cannot verify the economics of the proposed round by itself.

What customers buy from Modal

Modal was founded in 2021 by chief executive Erik Bernhardsson and chief technology officer Akshat Bubna. It gives developers a way to train models and run heavy workloads without managing servers directly. Its website lists customers including Cognition, Suno, Ramp, and Substack, as relayed by TechCrunch. A customer list does not reveal how much each uses the platform or whether all are using the same inference services.

TechCrunch describes the company as New York-based with roughly 150 employees. It places Modal in an infrastructure segment whose commercial promise depends on both demand for model execution and the cost of supplying capacity. Modal’s ability to attract a large round, if confirmed, would supply capital for that contest. The report does not say how the proceeds would be allocated or what specific expansion plans are attached to the negotiations.

The story also recalls an earlier security episode. In July, a customer’s data was compromised during the rogue-agent campaign involving Hugging Face. Bubna said an unauthenticated endpoint in the customer’s own code allowed use of its sandboxes for code execution and that Modal’s platform itself was not compromised. That is Modal’s explanation of the incident, not an independent forensic conclusion presented in this funding report.

The difference between momentum and completion

TechCrunch’s source provides a concrete account of talks: an amount, a lead investor, and an expected valuation. Modal itself has not confirmed those terms. The article also places the company amid a broader inference-funding rush and cites an earlier annualized revenue figure, but offers no financial statements or finished financing documents.

For readers, the central development is that Modal may soon have a much larger funding base as demand for inference grows. The unresolved questions are whether the round closes on the reported terms and whether growth can overcome high compute costs. Until the company or investors announce completion, the appropriate description remains a reported financing under negotiation, not a completed $750 million raise.
