A company can know the answer to an important question without any employee knowing where to find it. Part of the evidence sits in a Slack conversation, another part in a Google document, a customer ticket, a project tracker, or a code repository. OpenAI’s company knowledge feature is designed to let ChatGPT search across those boundaries and assemble a sourced response.
Connections include Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and GitHub, with Asana, GitLab Issues, and ClickUp among the planned additions. OpenAI says a version of GPT-5 checks multiple sources, and each answer identifies where its information originated.
The feature moves ChatGPT from general writing assistance toward an analyst grounded in the organisation’s private working record. It also makes the quality of that record visible: duplicated files, unresolved decisions, and inconsistent access rules can all surface through the answer.
One Question Can Cross Several Systems
A manager preparing for a customer call could request a briefing assembled from recent messages, email details, notes, and support tickets. A product team could combine customer feedback, survey material, and recurring support themes. Engineering leaders could compare GitHub work, Linear tickets, and Slack bug reports while planning a release.
The system is intended to do more than retrieve matching documents. Asked about next year’s company objectives, it can summarise the discussion and identify unresolved disagreements. That analytical layer matters because organisational knowledge is often contradictory, unfinished, or expressed informally rather than captured in one authoritative file.
OpenAI is competing with Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, AWS, IBM, and SAP to become the trusted interface over enterprise information. Model quality matters, but connector coverage and the fit with existing systems increasingly determine practical usefulness. The winning assistant may be the one that understands where work already happens, not merely the one that writes the smoothest response.
Existing Permissions Become the Security Boundary
ChatGPT is designed to see only the information the current user can already access. Enterprise and Education administrators can control connected applications and create custom roles. OpenAI also provides encryption, single sign-on, SCIM, IP allowlisting, and a Compliance API for logging, and says customer data is not used for training by default.
Respecting existing permissions is necessary, but it can expose weaknesses already present. A broadly shared folder that attracted little attention may become much easier to query once an assistant can surface its contents conversationally. Before deployment, security and data leaders need to review permissions in every connected service.
The assistant also changes the scale of discovery. Finding one sensitive document manually requires effort; asking a broad question can bring several sources together instantly. Access reviews, logging, and user guidance should therefore accompany the connector rollout. Convenience compresses the time between permission and exposure.
Useful Pilots Begin With Difficult Information Work
The initial version has constraints. Users must select company knowledge when starting a conversation, and the mode cannot simultaneously search the public web or create charts. OpenAI says it is working to remove these trade-offs.
Rather than enabling the feature everywhere, organisations can begin with workflows where fragmentation causes measurable delay. Client briefings, cross-department reporting, campaign summaries, or release planning offer clear outputs against which time and quality can be compared.
Leaders should also compare the connector list with their actual technology estate. A powerful model cannot unify information held in a system it cannot reach, and a competing platform may integrate more naturally with an organisation’s cloud, identity, and business applications.
Company knowledge makes data organisation more important, not less. A sourced answer can reveal disagreement, but it cannot decide which obsolete document should be retired or correct permissions that were too generous from the start. ChatGPT can make scattered memory accessible; the enterprise remains responsible for ensuring that memory is current, governed, and worth trusting.
