AI Self-Diagnosis Grows as Britons Wait for GP Appointments

When a medical appointment is ten days away, an immediate conversational answer can feel more useful than silence. A nationwide Confused.com Life Insurance study reports that three in five Britons use AI to self-diagnose health conditions, while 35 percent expect to use it this way in future.

The behaviour reflects access, privacy, cost, and convenience. It also exposes a dangerous ambiguity in the phrase “self-diagnosis.” AI can organise questions and explain terminology, but it cannot examine a patient, verify every relevant fact, or reliably rule out a serious condition.

The rise of health assistants therefore creates an opportunity to support clinical care and a risk that plausible information delays it.

Speed and Privacy Explain Why Patients Ask AI First

Symptom checks are the most common health query, used by 63 percent of survey respondents. Half ask about side effects, 38 percent seek lifestyle and wellbeing guidance, and 20 percent use AI for mental-health support or coping strategies.

Forty-two percent say AI is quicker than waiting for a doctor. Younger adults are especially active: 85 percent of people aged 18–24 regularly search for health issues with AI, compared with 35 percent of those over 65. Almost a quarter feel more comfortable asking a system than discussing health face to face, rising to 39 percent among 18–24-year-olds.

That comfort can help people formulate questions they might otherwise avoid. It can also conceal urgency. A conversational system does not observe physical deterioration or understand missing context unless the user describes it accurately.

Helpful Information Is Not the Same as a Clinical Diagnosis

Eleven percent say AI helped their condition “a great deal,” while 41 percent report some help. These perceptions may reflect clearer information, reassurance, or encouragement to seek care. They do not establish diagnostic accuracy.

Tom Vaughan of Confused.com stresses that AI can support initial research, but a GP or pharmacist provides the professional assessment. Conditions may worsen or become chronic without appropriate treatment, and a confident answer can be particularly harmful when it falsely reassures.

Health interfaces need clear escalation. Red-flag symptoms should direct users toward urgent services, uncertainty should be visible, and systems should avoid presenting a differential explanation as a confirmed condition. Mental-health conversations require equally careful crisis pathways.

Users also need help asking better questions. Age, medication, duration, and changes in severity can alter the significance of a symptom. An assistant that clearly identifies missing context is safer than one that fills the gaps with a smooth, generic explanation.

Connected Health Data Raises the Stakes

The survey coincides with the launch of ChatGPT Health. The feature allows users to connect medical records and wellness apps such as Apple Health, providing more personalised explanations. OpenAI says it supports understanding lab results and tracking wellbeing rather than replacing medical care.

More context can make an answer relevant, but it also makes errors and privacy failures more consequential. Users need to understand what information is connected, how access can be revoked, where it is stored, and whether it influences services outside the health conversation.

OpenAI says the feature was developed with input from hundreds of physicians. That expertise should be paired with ongoing evaluation across ages, conditions, language abilities, and identities. Safety cannot be inferred from an average response when uncommon cases carry high risk.

The reported 230 million weekly health-related ChatGPT inquiries show that people have already made AI part of the care journey. Healthcare systems should not pretend the behaviour can simply be prohibited. They can instead teach patients how to use AI for preparation, explanation, and follow-up while preserving professional diagnosis.

AI’s popularity is a signal about unmet access as much as technological enthusiasm. The safest response connects faster information to appropriate human care, ensuring that “Dr AI” becomes a doorway to health support rather than an alternative waiting room with no clinician.
